The Crawford County Historical Society will host an open house on Friday, December 16, 2022, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.  The museum staff is ready for the holiday season with trees, vintage Santas, and much more.

The Museum

This year marks two decades for the museum in the historic building once the Cuba area school.  The building has a long history. According to “Celebrating 150 Years, A History of Cuba 1857-2007”, Cuba’s first public school was a one-room log structure built in 1857. The teacher, Pleasant Robinson, had 12 students and a few books. The school burned down and was replaced in 1870 with another log school which unfortunately burned down in 1904. Just a year later, in 1905, a special bond election was held to build a public school on Smith St. that operated until 1958.

With a long history, the old school was a logical location for the museum.  Thanks to the City of Cuba, the building was a solution and a home for the unfolding museum. The idea of a museum grew from a few items and a cabinet. The building houses three floors of one-of-a-kind artifacts, some dating back thousands of years.

The museum staff meticulously curates the past. The team works to archive history and record the present.  Crawford County Historical Society President, Kim Roedemeirer shares, “It is exciting to celebrate this milestone. The museum is a great asset to our community.”

Roedemeier’s predecessor, Betty DeLeo, CCHS President from 2002-2021, was an intricate part of the museum staff for 20 years. DeLeo states, “The museum shares and preserves the stories of our lives. To see and touch the past is very powerful.”

The museum conducts tours for groups, schools, and individuals and happily shares information about Crawford County’s past.  Also, the museum is a helpful genealogy resource for pioneer families in Crawford County.
